I'm not flexible enough to practise yoga.... This was my first reaction when I decided to join a yoga class over 35 years ago. I soon discovered you do not need to be flexible to practice yoga! After attending classes for two to three weeks, I was hooked on yoga. At that moment in time I had no idea why we practised breathing exercises, posture (asana) work and relaxation. I just knew I felt uplifted when leaving the class and throughout the days following. I sincerely thank Madeleine Lewis, my first yoga teacher, for my introduction to yoga all those years ago.
My training I moved from Surrey to Somerset in 2000, and once we had settled into country living, I decided to train with the British Wheel of Yoga as a yoga teacher. During this three year training course the mystery of yoga was unravelled, and the Science of Yoga and philosophy explained. I continue to study with the British Wheel of Yoga to enhance my knowledge and teaching skills. I have undertaken the BWY module 'People living with Cancer' led by Julie Friedeberger and Yoga Therapy with Nikki Jackson, Yoga for Sleeplessness led by Judy Hirsh Sampath plus numerous IST training days, which are always a delight to attend.
My teaching style The focus of my teaching is to meet the individual needs of my students within the class environment. People come to yoga for a variety of reasons:
'I've been recommended to try yoga as I have a back problem'
'I'd like to give yoga a try to combat my tension headaches'
'I am fit, but understand practising yoga will complement my fitness regime'
'I need to have time to myself, where I can recharge my batteries'
'I've forgotten what it is like to feel completely relaxed'
Practising yoga enables you, as an individual, to become more intuitive about yourself. As a yoga teacher my role is to lead you through the various practices, offering alternatives and modifications to poses and practices, to suit your individual needs and limitations. With regular practice you will build up your own 'toolkit' of yoga practices to assist you in your day to day life, improving your sense of wellbeing and more..........
